Riverdale Elementary Wastes Less
As part of our Dairy Week promotion, Student Ambassadors collected empty milk cartons to construct a larger milk carton as part of a contest. The focus of the week soon shifted as we discovered over 100 milk cartons were being thrown away still full. We began a milk and snack recycling program to save unopened food and drink from waste. Our Fuel Up to Play 60 refrigerator is now placed in the cafeteria at every meal for students to place unopened food/drinks in. During PE our 3rd - 5th graders are offered milk or snacks about once a week, based on numbers of donations. In addition to the recycling program, students were also educated this week with fact sheets from MidWest Dairy and poster contests.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We were able to promote milk and save valuable food and drinks from the trash.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our Ambassadors lead the program with standby assistance from advisors. The theme ties in well with our ecology club and upcoming Earth Week as well.
