Riverside Central Brings the Farm to School

Riverside brought the Farm to School in several different ways this year. First, a nutrition activity was presented where students learned how various vegetables and grains grew and how we get our milk and yogurt. Next students made a vegetable pizza with a whole grain crust, a layer of Greek yogurt mixed with ranch and assorted vegetables. This activity was presented multiple time so many students could be a part of this. Next a dairy farmer visited our school and taught students much about how cows produce milk and how it gets to the school. Last an FFA group came to our school and even brought animals with them to teach us more about farming.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We accomplished our goals by reaching out to many different groups in the community including a dietetic intern from Mayo Clinic, a dairy farmer connected to Midwest Dairy, and a Future Farmers of America Chapter. It is great to use others in the community to teach students things they may have not experienced.
