Here at Robert E. Lee it is a very low income based community and therefore arriving here 5 years a go I realized that they were not given many opportunities to showcase the natural abilities that they had due to fees that were needed to participate in various sports and activities. Therefore I began fitness clubs for Kinder and 1st grade which takes place on Mondays, 2nd and 3rd Grade is on Wednesdays, and 4th and 5th Grade has their Fitness Club sessions on Fridays. During this time they work on Cardiovascular Endurance, Strength, Agilities and Speed. They really look forward to this. From this I realized that now they can play in sports so I began a flag football team which has placed in the top 3 in 31 teams for the past 5 years! They really work hard.

How did you accomplish your goals?

I accomplished my goals by always believing in the students and by always being there for them when they need something. They are great kids who just need some extra attention and also an extra push to get the best out of them.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Challenges I had to overcome was gaining the trust of the parents when it came down to them having to sign up for a certain sport or for the fitness club. Being that they had never been in a sport, they had to understand that this was for the better of the child and that this could possibly change their life for the future.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Improvements that I have noticed is that students self confidence level has risen due to the fact that they have something to look forward to at the end of the day. They also understand that if they do not behave or maintain good grades, there will be consequences to their actions. Consequences may be being kicked out of a club or team and being suspended for a week is also an option.
