Rowdy Recipes

At Baker Middle School, we kicked off our Fuel Up to Play 60 program with the "Yogurt's Got Game" contest. Students worked in groups to come up with a healthy recipe featuring yogurt. Groups made their dairy dish, shared with the class why it was healthy, and had a taste test to see which recipes were the most satisfying. Since the contest was such a success, we decided to participate in the Recipe Contest Play throughout the remainder of the year. Students will now work in groups to create recipes every six weeks for each MyPlate food group; vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and proteins. At the end of the school year, we will compile the recipes from each winner into a “Rowdy Recipe” cook book to share with the school. Hopefully Rowdy and the Dallas Cowboys approve of our nutritious choices!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Students worked together in teams to research and create healthy recipes. Adults helped by providing resources with nutritional information and guidance for food groups. Furthermore, adults supplied the ingredients for students to be able to make their recipes, hosted the taste tests during class, and submitted the students' Success Stories online.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We are making the Play last by having a taste test for each of the MyPlate food groups throughout the school year. We plan to continue this in the following school years as well.
