Run and Walk Club. Students could choose between running or walking during club time on Friday mornings. We started to see how we felt on days we had the club and compared them to days we did not. Most students noticed an increase in energy throughout the day. They also reported being able to concentrate better. In the end, students who participated said they believe walking/running before school helped them thoughout the school day and want to increase the number of days next year, not just limit to Fridays.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Bad weather did create a problem. If it was below 40 degrees we were unable to go outside. We did run in the hallways once, but it was difficult due to the size of the group so we incorporated stations like jump rope, rest/drink, walk/run.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
The students are trying to increase the number of club days, however it does not seem to fit in the school day. We need to explore before-school options if we can get adult help.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
Students that participated kept an activity journal and reported feeling more energetic and able to focus on run days. We would like to find a way to track student progress with the teachers, perhaps with a questionnaire to see if they noticed a difference.
