Run Around Florida

Last year we had a Read/Run Marathon, for which students read 26 books and then ran 26 miles. To enhance our running program this year, we included a Run Around Florida competition. Each grade level runs on Wednesday around our track. We mapped the distance around Florida and use the combined mileage of each grade level to see how far they have run. The distance is plotted on the map in the hallway, with each grade level distance marked. We also keep a graph of student mileage for all to see. So far we are almost around the tip of Florida. Students have enjoyed seeing how far their grade has run.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We are looking at starting earlier next year and maybe doing a run around the US.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students have shown more interest in running and walking, so they can get their grade level mileage higher than another grade.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

In the beginning, the Coach wanted the total to be the entire school average, which allowed the school to get around Florida in a matter of a month or so. He was worried about doing individual student scores, so as a compromise we did grade level competition.
