Run for Fun

We started a Run/Walk for Fun Program for students to get more physical activity in their day and those who would eventually like to participate in the Run for Schools Road Race in October, a fundraiser for the Iowa City Schools. Portions of the money raised goes to the physical education departments of participating schools. Individuals set goals and worked with students with similar goals. We usually met before school every day.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We had to take a break as the weather changed, but we plan on picking it back up in the spring for kids who are not out for track. We plan on having an incentive, either entering a local race or creating one of our own.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Teachers came out and ran with the kids providing support and encouragement for each other.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Weather was a challenge and having enough time to complete the run for kids who rode the bus. We did offer alternate opportunities during study hall and lunch.
