I started a running club for my students and had 30 students participate in a large, city-wide running event. Thirty students finished a 5k and participated in the running club, leading up to the event. The event was part of a grant through the Cowtown Calf foundation. As part of the grant, my students received running shoe, free of charge, for their training. They also received coaching, during class, from running coaches, from the Cowtown Marathon. Due to the overwhelming participation in the first event, I scheduled a smaller 5k that we just completed, this past weekend. I had fifteen students participate/finish the event. As a result of the running club and 5k participation, I have had several students join a local running club to continue their running, even when school is out for the summer.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The biggest challenge I faced with this running initiative was getting the parent support I needed to have the students participate. This took a great deal of communication and patience. I attended several parent meetings, and sent out countless flyers/handouts about the running events. I also worked with parents that I already had a good working relationship with, to help me further explain the program.
