Running Our Way to Health
At Fruitland Intermediate School, we have created a Before-School Walking Club. With parent permission, any student (or staff member!) may join our Before-School Walking Club. The club runs from October- May, Monday through Friday, 8:15-8:45 am. Students may walk around the outside track with their friends or they may decide to run the track to get in some serious exercise before school! This school year we also invited some Walking Club members and created a pilot cross-country club. The students would participate at Walking Club and run/walk at recess. This was to prepare our students for an friendly one mile Fun Run competition against another school. The students were able to take leadership in this event and show good sportsmanship during a fun one mile course at the school. This was an amazing opportunity for the students and parents.

How did you accomplish your goals?

I was able to work collaboratively with my administration, co-teacher, and parents to create a safe, fostering program for my students. This program promoted healthy choices and physical activity time.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

My school was able to partner with another elementary school in the county to have a friendly one mile run.
