We held an event at the United Tribes Technical College (UTTC) cafeteria to celebrate National School Breakfast Week. The cafeteria not only feeds the college students on campus but also serves the Theordore Jamerson Elementary School (TJES) students. This event was help on March 11th from 7:30 am to 8:30 am. A letter was sent out to all TJES parents to encourage them to join their students for breakfast that day. The students and families were able to sample healthy smoothies and oatmeal peanut butter breakfast bites, while receiving tips and recipes from the campus Registered Dietitian. The UTTC mascot Thunderbird also came to take photos with the students in the " I LOVE BREAKFAST" photo booth. We also went around and asked students what their favorite healthy breakfast is and posted it on the board.
How did you accomplish your goals?
We encourage parents and students to eat breakfast every day and provided education on all the benefits students receive by eating breakfast every day.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge was marketing for the event. Beside the letters we sent home with the students to give to the parents, there really isn't a way to reach parents and to see how many people would be attending the event. In addition to the letters, we also hung up flyers around campus in hopes of reaching the college students (who are also parents of the elementary school students).
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
I hope to have this event every year and have the FUTP 60 students do a little activity too. I also hope to see smoothies as a breakfast item in the cafeteria.
