North Star Academy Elementary School put the school garden to use for the good of the community! Not only did each classroom get to decide on they vegetables they planted in their bed, but they collected favorite recipes from the students/families using those vegetables and compiled them into a school recipe book for each student. All of the vegetables that are grown in the garden are given to the local Salvation Army.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
The teachers and students had to work together to decide on the vegetables to be planted, and then to prepare the garden bed and plant the seeds. Each classroom was also responsible for watering the garden which was not a small task - 12 vegetable beds!
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Watering the garden ended up being the biggest challenge as the nearest water spigot was on the opposite side of the school building. To overcome this problem, we had to fill large drums of water and push them on a cart to the garden.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
The large hoop house that was donated to our school is now a permanent structure. We have plans to continue our classroom garden beds each year, and invite local experts to share their knowledge of gardening with us. It was such a fun and successful Play that our middle school is hoping to start a school garden of their own!
