Sem Elementary - GOLDEN SHOES

Our goal was to encourage students and parents to walk or bike to school more often. Sem Elementary's Wellness Council (with includes teachers, parents and students) planned a monthly Walk/Bike to School Day - the first Wednesday of every month. Each month was assigned a theme: wear red, crazy socks, hat day. The PE department provided chalk for students that walked or biked to sign their name on the sidewalk in front of the school. Students from the Wellness Council tally the students from each grade level that participated and the winning grade level won the "Golden Shoes" for the month. The grade level with the most "Golden Shoes" award will win a Dance Party at the end of the year.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The Wellness Council which includes teachers, parents and students came up with the idea together and planned the event. The students give a reminder on the morning announcements. The students tallied the students who participated and announced the grade level winner. Because we are an elementary school, parents and students would walk/bike to school together. Teachers, coaches and parents from the Wellness Council welcome the students to school.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

More students are participating in the event. The traffic flow is nicer on these days because there are fewer cars on the road. Students are parents are starting their morning with physical activity. Students are now walking/biking more often.

How did you accomplish your goals?

I feel we accomplished our goal by making the event fun and encouraging parents to walk/bike to school with their students. We made it a family activity and added a competition. Everyone can participate and it's easy and fun!
