Students at SouthTech Academy used Fuel Up to Play 60 funds to purchase backpacks, lockers and a small refrigerator to store perishable items. Our students worked to fill these backpacks with food every week for students in need. We also created a small food pantry for students that needed extra meals during the week.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students filled the backpacks and completed background research on food insecurity in our area. The teachers at our school volunteered to pick up food from the food banks for the program and monitor student usage of the program.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Now that we have backpacks, storage lockers and a refrigerator for perishable items, we can refill the backpacks and stock the food pantry for years (with the continued support of local food banks).

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Some of the students did not want to take a backpack of food, so we adapted the program to include the food pantry. Now students can choose the food and take it home in their own backpacks.
