Prairie Rose Elementary has recently implemented a sharing table for use by all students eating hot lunch. Students that do not consume or open contained food and beverages now have a designated area that is supervised to share with their peers. Students that have eaten their food are eligible to take an item from the sharing table with supervision to ensure we are meeting food guidelines.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
Students volunteer food that's not consumed and adults watch when another student wishes to consume the food. Adults actively seek students in the cafeteria that may wish to take food and beverages from the sharing table and they wash and hand-out.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
The sharing the table is purchased by the school and is specficially designed for an area that efficiently meets traffic flow. This table will be in use every school day this year and beyond as it's easily become integrated with our school.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Students have initiated sharing their unused items to the sharing table. Adults have structured this opportunity and working to empower student ownership of the entire process; i.e. foods, flow, and micro-supervision.
