Sharpen the Saw Day was held on Friday, October 9. This year, in an effort to be in alignment with the Leader in Me initiative, the 1K Healthy Iowa Walk will be replaced by Sharpen the Saw Day. The day’s activities will include Zumba and Pilates by Lifetime Fitness instructors, a variety of board games, a nutrition expert from HyVee discussing healthy choices, yoga by Lululemon, physical activities by the YMCA, as well as other fun events. Students and staff members will be able to participate in a balanced program for self-renewal in the four areas of their lives: physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The students have shown more of an interest in helping others. They are truly learning how to reach out to those in need.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students had to come together at the healthy eating station to design a meal that met all requirements set by the dietitian. It was fun to see them give each other feedback and really think deeply about their food choices.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Organizing the day was a huge task. Luckily I work with wonderful people who helped along the way. I would reach out to teachers who knew community members that would come and help.
