Helping Others in Need - Shawanoe Jump and Hoops for Heart Event

Students at Shawanoe Elementary school in Shawnee, KS. had their annual Jump and Hoops for Heart event the week of February 20-24. All 1st through 6th grade students participated in the event during their PE time. Students either did a Jump Rope or Basketball activity during their class time. Although it was not required for students to try and raise donations, many of the students did turn in donations. Last year, we raise just over $1,200 for the American Heart Association. With that in mind, we set our goal at $1,300 and actually surpassed that figure by bringing in just over $1,400 this year. Our students really enjoy this event and know the importance of keeping your heart healthy by exercising.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Our school is a Title I school and we have over 70% of our students on free and reduced lunch. Because of the low income, these students have to work hard to get their donations. We had over 100 students turn in donations for the event this year.
