At Old Settlers Elementary School, “SHINE Time” occurs three days each week, during the last forty-five minutes of the school day. Our fifth grade students have five different SHINE classes from which to choose. This year, one of those choices was Fuel Up to Play 60. The students in our Fuel Up to Play 60 group met in the gym during “SHINE Time”. During this time, these students designed physically active games which students in their grade level can play during recess time. These students then acted as representatives, encouraging other students in their grade level to be physically active during recess by participating in these active games which they had designed. Some of these students also appeared on the morning announcements to hype up their game by inviting other students in their grade level to join them on the field at recess to learn the new game. The students in the Fuel Up to Play 60 groups also made posters to promote the games that they designed.
How did you accomplish your goals?
The Fuel Up to Play 60 “SHINE Time” class has motivated students to be physically active and to encourage their peers to be physically active as well. These students have enjoyed using their creativity to design their own original games. This process has also caused these students to think about how to keep all the participants actively involved in their games.
