Sims Middle School

Sims Middle School has greatly benefited from the Fuel Up to Play 60 Grant. We started a Running Club through Marathon Kids and have been able to provide valuable nutrition information and healthy food choices to our students. Prior to the 2016-2017 Sims Middle did not have a running club. We now have 83 participants who have ran a total of 1,139 miles as of 3/29/17. We have promoted physical activity through two running club meetings each week, promoted participation in local 5K races, and cultivated a track team that participated in the first Annual Middle School Showcase in Santa Rosa County. To improve the conditions for physical activity we purchased equipment that has been used to improve the running area for our students. These things include: stop watches, a timer, mile markers, reflectors, and trees to add needed shade. We have also been fortunate enough to purchase coolers to carry healthy food choices, water coolers, food carts, a refrigerator, and healthy snacks and drink options such as: granola bars, cheese sticks, yogurt, fruit, water bottles, and Gatorades. Our students have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a “sport environment” that gives them an opportunity to serve their school. Students love the rewards that are given for participation and that are provided by Marathon Kids and loved being recognized for their achievements. We are grateful for the funding from Fuel Up to Play 60 and appreciate the impact it has had for Sims Middle School.

How did you accomplish your goals?

As a PE Department with a supportive administration, we were able to work together for the best interests of our students. We all wanted to see the students get actively involved and also learn valuable information that will assist them in living a healthy lifestyle.
