Sivells Wharton Tigers Take on the Junior Fire Academy Challenge

The Wharton Volunteer Fire Department started a Junior Fire Academy Challenge last year. The Sivells Wharton Tigers FUTP 60 After School Team took on the challenge on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2016. Each team member was put through the course that a fire fighter may face when battling a fire. The students had to run through obstacles, carry the water hose, knock down a door, carry a body, and put out a fire. Each student learned very quickly what good shape a fire fighter must be in on a daily basis. The students had a great time!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The FUTP 60 advisor reached out to the Chief of the fire department about helping with the challenge. They were pumped to have our students demonstrate for others how to run the course. The students will be available to the fire department to help other groups or individuals that want to participate in the challenge.

How did you accomplish your goals?

The students accomplished their goal of running through the course. They quickly learned that fire fighters are in great shape! The students learned how important it is to have a fire department in our community.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The students are working harder on their physical activities to get into shape. Some of the team members have expressed a desire to become fire fighters when they grow up.
