As a new Physical Education teacher at Russell D. Jones Elementary, I quickly learned that 70% of my Kindergartners did not know how to skip. Research has shown that kids who know how to skip are better readers. So we went to work. I would pull groups of Kindergartners each day at 2pm and we would break down the skipping process! Within a few short months 99% of Kindergartners knew how to skip! I have no doubt that we will be at 100% any day now!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The Kindergarten teachers were wonderful to work with on scheduling a time that worked to send students to the gym for extra practice. The students were AMAZING about helping each other learn to skip once they learned themselves!

How did you accomplish your goals?

Working everyday together with teachers and students and ONLY positive attitudes!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

I expected to see their reading levels go up but what I didn’t expect to see was such a big impact on their confidence! They come up to me in the hallway all day long and show me they can still skip. I get parent phone calls and emails letting me know how much they love skipping and show everyone they can!!!
