A program called Smarter Bites made up of Juniors and Seniors from Greenhill High School in Addison, TX came to our school to present their program to our 3rd through 5th graders. They presented information about how to eat better for physical activity and for sports performance. They discussed the importance of following the food pyramid and portion control. It was very beneficial to have these young adults come to our school and interact with our students. They lead the students in physical activities through out the presentation to make clear the importance of moving along with eating right.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
The students asked questions to the presenters and they were answered along with personal stories. If students answered questions correctly about information that was presented, they received a Smarter Bites bracelet. The students love getting a reward for their answers!
What improvements have you seen at your school?
Our school has made huge improvements over the last 4 years in regards to healthy eating. Students are performing better on the Fitnessgram and we are seeing students making healthier choices in the cafeteria. Our staff has bought in to eating better also.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We will incorporate the information from Fuel Up and Smarter Bites into our PE lesson plans. We also are starting a program called Catch You Eating Healthy. Which will reward students in the cafeteria for making healthy choices from their cafeteria tray. If a student is seen eating a fruit or veggie a sticker will be given as a public affirmation for their healthy choice.
