Smoothie Bike Success

To increase parental involvement and observe the holiday season, East Middle School held our first Holiday Craft Event. The purpose was to give parents and students a chance to be creative together and spend some one on one time outside of the home. Not all parents can afford to take their kids to Rockefeller Center to see the big tree or other major holiday events, so a night like this is really important. Of course our Fuel Up to Play 60 student Ambassadors were on hand to demonstrate our new smoothie bike purchased with our grant money. We, the Advisors, discussed the importance of healthy snacking and how making smoothies can be a great vehicle to "hide" nutrient-rich vegetables while still getting fruits and dairy in as well. The discussion was led in both English and Spanish. We were proud to announce Fuel Up to Play 60 en espanol and began making our smoothies. Ingredients were added to the blender by our student Ambassadors and they instructed students on the smoothies bikes. Student Ambassadors also served the smoothies, along with water or chocolate milk. Many students not in the Fuel Up to Play 60 program were interested in getting involved.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our student Ambassadors chose the flavor of the smoothie, while the adults shopped for the items. Students managed the lines for the smoothie bike, while adults handled placing the smoothies into cups. We didn't want the students close to any blades.
