Our Wiley H Bates Middle School club has a favorite event called Smoothie Day, that we try and hold each marking period. We just kicked off Spring with a smoothie event last week. It was a great success! We served over 260 smoothies to students staying after school for sports, activities and clubs. Many remarked they hadn't had one before and even more asked for the recipe. This event highlighted a new healthy snack. It also highlighted dairy with the use of low fat yogurt and milk. It is our goal to continue to reach out to our students and community with new healthy dairy ideas that will help them make smarter snack decisions. We are grateful to Fuel Up to Play 60 and the Dairy Association. They have inspired us to encourage the community to focus on and promote healthy eating.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Our Fuel Up to Play 60 club comes together to plan and execute each event. The students get together to survey the school to find out favorite flavors. Our club creates a recipe and plans for the next smoothie day. We are grateful to adult volunteers who assist with purchasing the supplies and helping to execute the smoothies that day. Our school staff is also a help in supporting and promoting our efforts. It is very fulfilling to see the event happen and to have it be such a success.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

This event is all about teamwork! Students are tasked with surveying the school and promoting the event prior to the date. Adults are in charge of purchasing supplies and helping to make the smoothies. Teachers gain support throughout the school administration and help guide the students the day of the event. The students are responsible for smoothie distribution and clean up. It is truly a great example of many coming together to make a popular event successful!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Our goal is to have a smoothie day once each marking period. We have purchased equipment that we are able to use at each event. The popularity and success has made this a favorite event among teachers and students at our school. We believe this excitement will help us continue to have the support and enthusiasm to keep this going this year and beyond. Our hope is to receive additional funding to help us purchase supplies so that we can continue to hold these events moving forward.
