Smoothie Day in PE at Kimball Elementary
Our students at Kimball Elementary enjoyed a Smoothie Day in PE on October 26th! All students were able to try a yogurt, strawberry, banana and carrot smoothie!! Our district nutrition department was invited to talk to the students about making healthy snacking choices and then the students watched as we (PE) and some parent volunteers made quick healthy smoothies. The kids really enjoyed this day and have been talking about it ever since! We received a FUTP 60 grant last year and were able to purchase Vitamix blenders. We are using them as much as we can this year to snack smarter!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our FUTP 60 student leadership team made posters around the school to get kids excited. They also talked about it on the announcements (filmed and posted on YOUtube). We had parent and teacher volunteers in almost every grade and the school district nutrition department helped make the smoothies and talked about healthy eating choices (to include dairy) with all the students.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

Since the blenders are owned by our school, the only cost is the cups and the ingredients. We have asked our yogurt vendor to donate to this project and we ask each student to bring either a fruit or veggie (we give each grade a different ingredient so we know what we're getting). This has worked now for 2 smoothie days. We plan on using this same model each time.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Our kids are ALWAYS talking about healthy eating now! Whenever I walk through the cafeteria, our kids are always saying things like "look I got the white milk today instead of the chocolate," or "look I'm having fruit as my snack today." I've even had multiple students let me know that they have made smoothies at home for a snack with their families. It's really exciting to see the kids bragging about making healthy choices.
