Smoothie Success!

We formed our Fuel Up to Play 60 team at the beginning of the year and it is composed of approximately 15 of our 4th and 5th grade students. Our Play this year was Breakfast – Anytime, Anywhere! Increasing our breakfast participation has been a goal of district and actually superintendent for two years now so we were determined to make this year the year that we get kids excited about breakfast! We had our first event of the year as our kickoff event in November. We had a big marketing push including newsletters out to parents, e-blasts, our Fuel Up to Play 60 team wearing their shirts during the week, and including the event on the morning video announcements. We had a “smoothie challenge” where we selected the top three smoothie recipes from our students. Once the recipes were selected, we had our Fuel Up to Play 60 team make the smoothies during lunch and pass out them to their fellow classmates. Students voted for the “best smoothie” in their class (this ensured we also involved the teachers and helped take the conversation out of the cafeteria and into the classroom).

Once a winner was selected, this was added to our breakfast menu. We kept the momentum going from this event and then created "pop-up smoothies" on Thursdays for breakfast. (By selecting one day a week as a feature day we found that we could keep the weekly excitement of smoothies... and compete with bagel day!) We were able to pair the fruit and low-fat dairy smoothie with a grain to be able to qualify as a reimbursable meal. In our first month of selling fruit and of course low-fat dairy smoothies, our breakfast participation has increased from 14 a day to 54... that's an overall 286% INCREASE!!!! We love seeing more of our kids start their day right with breakfast. Teachers have also verbally reported that the students that have their smoothies are able to concentrate throughout the morning better! This success story would not of been possible without the support of Fuel Up to Play 60 and the United Dairy Counsel of Michigan. We were able to get funding from Fuel Up to Play 60 for the blender and necessary items for this. An important component for us is the communication and support between myself in nutrition, our PE teacher, and school staff support. THANK YOU to everyone who makes this possible!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We are continuing pop-up smoothies for breakfast every Thursday morning!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our Fuel Up to Play 60 student team meets with our PE teacher on a regular basis. When we have special events planned, our dietitian meets with the team as well to strive toward a common goal - eating healthy and being active!!
