Century High School implemented smoothies for breakfast in November 2015 after seeing how successful the breakfast item was at another site in the district. Once a week students are treated with a homemade, healthy smoothie that consists only of milk, yogurt, and fruit. The smoothie is also served with a choice of a whole grain cracker for a complete breakfast. Student Nutrition Services began taste testing with students at the beginning of the school year and decided to do a rotation of the 3 most popular smoothies. Since implementing breakfast smoothies, many new students who don’t normally have breakfast at school now have breakfast.
When planning for a new breakfast item, make sure to involve the students in taste tests to get feedback from them since they are the once who actually have the smoothies. Also, make sure management is involved in order to make sure enough labor is on hand to make smoothies in the morning since it is a more labor intensive breakfast item.
Overall smoothies have been a great success. We are looking forward to developing new flavors this summer to add to our flavor rotation next school year!
