Access to Healthy Foods, Physical Activity Participation
On October 13, 2017, K-SHAC (Knights-Student Health Advisory Club) executed the first of two plays for the Fueluptoplay 60 grant. Play 1 was to serve smoothies to students in the cafeteria. The goal was to increase the number of students eating breakfast and increase the number of fruits/vegetable servings students eat per day. Play 2 was to provide students opportunities to get physical activity before, during and after school. We offered three physical activities (Dance, Stair Climbing, Volleyball). I’m happy to say…..Goals Accomplished!! We increased the number of students eating breakfast with fruit/vegetable smoothies. We had approximately 15% of the student population participate in a physical activity. One more time: Goals Accomplished!! We plan to continue offering smoothies and physical activities for the 2018-2019 school year. The goal is to help our student “body” live healthier lifestyles; one student at a time!
How did you accomplish your goals?
Getting help from the child nutrition services in our district, as well as our administration, was a big help. Also, our students were very dedicated to accomplish out plays.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Our biggest challenge was ordering things. Our district has policies on what can be ordered and from whom. This made it challenging.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
Although anecdotal, I noticed our students were talking more about healthy eating. They also seem to come together to get the plays accomplished.
