During the 2017-2018 school year, Santos Livas Elementary fourth and fifth grade girls participated in the City of Alamo Annual Softball Tournament. Most girls have never played softball but were inspired and motivated by one another to join the team. Each student played a strong role at their assigned position and worked together during PE and after school to get better. The girls placed third overall and were extremely excited in playing softball for the first time.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
The 4th and 5th grade girls each worked together during their PE time on throwing and catching a softball. They motivated each other to not get discouraged as they all were first time softball players.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
As a first year PE coach, who had no experience in playing softball, I faced the challenge of learning how to pitch to the girls. Setting up a line up, and learning each strength and weakness of the girls to play them in positions that were going to help the team.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
I have noticed that since the girls participated in the softball tournament, they all have gained close friendships. I see them say "hi" in the hallways or talking about registering to play softball with the city league. Playing sports equals making long life friends.
