Our 8th grade students in FCS class made smoothies where they had to incorporate multiple portions of MyPlate. They hit fruit, vegetables, and dairy. Students used mango, raspberries, blueberries, banana, strawberries, peaches, nonfat yogurt, milk, and spinach. They could choose their fruit mix, but had to have milk, yogurt, and spinach.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
This is a lesson that will be in each 8th grade FCS class for the remainder of the year. We will adjust fruits as they are in season, but we use whole frozen without sugar or syrup added.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Each cooking group wanted different flavored smoothies, but they had to agree on one. After a person got their cup, they would add the next fruit, pour a cup, etc. They did this because some students only wanted one fruit while others wanted all of them.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
Many students will now make their own smoothies and are not afraid to add the spinach for nutritional value because it does not change the flavor of the smoothie. Fruit is an easy sell at our school, but vegetables are much harder to incorporate.
