STC Marathon Kids Club Tallies up Miles

The STC marathon kids running club at St. Charles Elementary has 50 2nd-5th grade students enrolled and tallying the miles every week. The club meets after school and also tracks mileage run at home and in gym class. The club runs between 1 1/2 and 2 miles once a week after school in addition to running in gym, planning running games and tracking miles with friends and families. A total of 70 running sessions will occur before Fall 2017.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The Fuel Up To Play 60 team includes students and adults and the Play was chosen and implemented by the mixed team of adults and students. Specifically, the students choose the Play and announced it to the students. The adults registered students and organized the meeting dates and times.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students who are not involved in after-school sports are involved in the running club. Students who have not previously been "active" are now participating in an organized physical activity opportunity.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

Being able to organize group runs for 50 students in a gym. We split the group in half and had "supporters" or partners track laps with Popsicle sticks.
