Our school's theme this year was "Strong Minds, Strong Bodies." Fuel Up to Play 60 and Building Healthy Communities grant allowed us to seamlessly incorporate a wide range of activities specific to our theme.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We accomplished our goals through the creation of the Student Leadership Team. Our fifth grade leaders plan, lead, and facilitate a span of healthy eating and physical activities throughout the year. This has included, but was not limited to, Healthy Snack competition among classes, pedometer counts, trips to Henry Ford and Oakland University, purchase of a Gaga Ball Pit and greenhouse, and others that were incorporated across the curriculum.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The Student Leadership Team was able to host some events by recruiting the PTO and other parents that volunteered to help serve, for example, at the Apple Taste Test this past fall. The PTO has kindly offered to support our initiative and businesses have even generously donated so we could purchase a class set of Walking Classroom Kits.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

The Student Leadership Team is in the process of identifying ways to recruit new leaders for next year, as well as better address the time required to meet and plan for the activities.
