I have an Advisory Council grades 6-8 made up of student leaders who promote healthy eating with other students. These students plan and advertise activities throughout the school. We are currently working on a project with 5th grade, starting an after school healthy cooking club.
How did you accomplish your goals?
Combining forces with the community extension office and classroom teachers as well as with after school tutoring, we can bring farmers in to teach about growing food, and cook with healthy recipes to give students an opportunity to learn where food comes from and how to prepare it.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Challenges are how to get students home from after school, so by teaming up with the tutoring program, we can use the same bus to take students home.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
The cafeteria has a new look, we have life size banners in the room showing students being active. We also have recreation equipment to check out at recess so students can stay active and the new cooking class promoting healthy eating at home.
