In addition to implementing the 100 Mile Club, our PE teachers have transformed one of our equipment rooms into a Wellness/Fitness Center! We have cardio machines, total gyms, kettle bells, medicine balls, bosu balls, scales, a squat machine, ab machine, etc! We implement fitness into all of our units and we allow students access to the Center during class time for that additional MVPA. Faculty, Staff, and the 100 Mile Club utilize it before and after school.
How did you accomplish your goals?
I actually sent out an email to all other PE teachers in the district asking if they had any extra fitness equipment that they no longer needed. The response was overwhelming! I received quite a number of donations, which was actually beneficial since only a portion of our funds are allocated towards physical activity.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Cleaning out the equipment room, and recycling old supplies was a challenge. Spacing was also a challenge. With the square footage provided, we had to figure out which pieces of equipment would actually fit inside the storage room, and also which pieces would be more efficient and allow for more students to use the Center at once.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
Allow access to the Fitness Center before school, after school, and also during the school day--- to be implemented into our lessons within our PE curriculum.
