I had a discussion with all 18 different classes I teach. I asked and encouraged students to sign/join the PE and Health Team at school. I explained further importance of all the programs within Fuel Up to Play 60 Healthy Eating and Physical Activity. As a result, tons of students wanted to join. I had to make a specific list of students who are now the school's PE and Health Team! We hold meetings and will continue to do so in the mornings, during lunch, or select times available during the school day. I am working on having the team meet as an after-school program as well. So far, these students have not only shown interest, but they've learned a ton about healthy eating and physical activity importance. We are making posters to put up all over the school and gym to promote healthy eating and physical activity. The students also are allowed to hold their own meetings during lunch or homeroom to talk to other students about the programs. The PTA is now getting involved to promote and help in any way possible along with vendors. I also obtained the Rutgers University Nutrition Program to come speak to our students in all grades about nutrition and the food groups. I am very pleased at how our students have responded so far!

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Several meetings were held between students and PTA.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students are talking about the programs even when it is not Health/PE time. Students are trying different activities during recess and even trying alternative meals/foods they would not normally eat during lunch.

How did you accomplish your goals?

I kept promoting and talking about the programs as much as possible beyond the meetings held. I also hold the students accountable for getting the word out. We now have a PE and Health Team because of the non-stop promotion of programs I spoke of!
