We use fitness journals in class 2-3 times a week. This has allowed for so many great conversations regarding goal setting and personal fitness. It has taught the kids what it means to set a reasonable goal and track their fitness in order to see change. We have the students complete a fitness benchmark at the beginning of the six weeks and at the end of the six weeks. I have had so many kids proudly come up to me to share their accomplishments and improvement. They are always very eager to see the results of the second benchmark. They really enjoy being able to see their progress and accomplishments.
What improvements have you seen at your school?
I believe there is overall a larger population of students aware of their fitness level and fitness shortcomings. We talk about where they were, where they are now and where they want to be. It is awesome to watch their faces when they realize they have met or exceeded a goal. I know that by using fitness journals it is making students more accountable for their personal fitness.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We will continue to have the students use their journals and encourage them to use them outside of school. We will continue to have the students use the journals as a way to track fitness and set goals. We will also use the journals as a reflection tool so that students are able to reflect how they felt during and after workouts.
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
Some students do not enjoy using the fitness journals and have a hard time getting them to class regularly. We will continue to encourage each student and highlight their successes. We also keep extra notebooks on hand so that we can provide for those who forget or cannot get a note book here. It is also a daily battle to engage every single student. With continued support and variety of exercise I hope we can find something that each student enjoys and can be proud of.
