The Bonneville Lunch Academy is in its 4th year. They are a team of students that meet weekly to evaluate potential food items for school lunch and discuss ways to improve the meals we serve. They have helped change the way people view school meals. Some of our highlights are:
*created smoothie recipes for our new Smoothie Makers, 4 recipes were created and rolled out to all the schools in the district.
*This year they worked on creating a humus recipe that would be acceptable to our students. We looked at commercial products, scratch using dried beans and scratch using canned beans. They came up with 4 different recipes using our "Flavor Station" herbs & spices. The love it and got to taste some new spices.
*They participated in a blind pizza taste test to help choose the new product(s) for next year.
*This past month they worked approximately 14 hours to prepare for the FUTP60 event tied to our grant. They made posters and created a plan to celebrate good nutrition and fitness. "Bee Active/Bee Healthy" and Lunch Games is their theme.
*Influenced the creation of other student committees in other districts.
*They were in the news. Local and national
* They represented our district at the USDA Advisory meeting (2015)
What improvements have you seen at your school?
We were able to take the some of the suggestions from the meetings and incorporate them into our school lunch program.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
The students were able to bring questions, concerns and ideas to the meeting each week. We came together as a team to find solutions and how to put their ideas into action.
How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?
We had meetings each week and then planned a "Bee Active/Bee Healthy" and Lunch Games as a final activity, which involved the whole school.
