Successful Second Chance Breakfast at the High School

Paulette Brinley,   Clinton County High School
Access to Healthy Foods
We started offering a Second Chance Breakfast at the high school this school year and have seen a MAJOR increase in breakfast participation. We run numbers after first breakfast and the participation percentage is usually in the low 30's. After 2nd Chance Breakfast (breakfast offered from carts in the hallways between 2nd and 3rd period classes), the percentage goes up in upper 50's to low 60's. Therefore, Second Chance Breakfast has been a BIG success in boosting our breakfast participation at the high school.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Staff at the high school take carts up halls for students to get breakfast. Staff (teachers, assistants, principal, etc) monitor the cart areas. The students participate in taking breakfast from the Second Chance Breakfast cart.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Breakfast participation has doubled on most days.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We will continue to offer Second Chance Breakfast at the high school and I am in hopes of implementing it at the middle school as well.
