Super Smoothies!

Our terrific team of Smoothie Experts met once a month from November to January to create smoothies with fruit, milk, and ice for the school. Once we got the hang of it, we increased our Smoothie Schedule to twice a month. So far, we've made mango, strawberry, pineapple, melon, and banana smoothies for the school to enjoy. We keep tweaking our recipe to get it just right and the smoothies get better every month.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The first smoothies were with melon, and the fruit wasn't ripe enough to make a tasty smoothie. We also found our smoothies were very foamy and separated quickly. We asked each team of students to make some adjustments (try more milk, less ice, more fruit, some combinations of more and less) and to report their findings. We now think that twice the fruit, half the ice and about 3/4 of the milk from our original recipe is the best.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students and advisors meet before every smoothie day to discuss challenges and to problem solve. The students adjust the recipe on their own and taste test it, then report to the advisors on how it was changed.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We're hoping to have students present during lunches next year to make smoothies on demand with the milk and fruit provided with school lunch. We just need the work done on adult schedules to make sure someone is available to oversee it.
