On February 2, 2016, we gave each of our 435 students an opportunity to "Snack Smarter" by participating in a taste test event at lunch. Every child was invited to try fresh vegetables with cucumber/yogurt/dill dip and/or fresh pears and apples served with a delicious yogurt/cinnamon dip. Students were then provided with a taste test voting ballot to share opinions of each sample. If a student returned his/her voting ballot, he/she was entered into a drawing for a Fuel Up to Play 60 apron. In order to manage giving every child an opportunity to enjoy a healthy snack, representatives from our Student Leadership team prepared and distributed snacks. Recipes for the two dips were put in our school newsletter as well as posted on our website. Overall, students at Scott enjoyed the fruit and dip more than the veggies and dip. All were extremely excited to get an opportunity to snack smarter!
What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?
The initial challenge was logistical - how do we give each student an opportunity to participate in the taste test, yet still have enough time to eat their lunch as well? We came up with several plans and then, decided on the best one. Plans were then flexible and tweaked with each lunch session. Our Student Leadership Team really stepped up to the plate and worked so hard to make this a success!
