Tasty Tuesday at Akin

https://www.youtube.com/embed/lnxyuw72wowWe implemented Tasty Tuesday earlier this year as a student led addition to our morning announcements. Our student leaders have been sharing healthy recipes and ideas on our Tuesday announcements. A few weeks ago, one of our student leaders, Lizzy S., decided that we should have students filming themselves creating or making healthy snacks and meals at home. So, we sent out permission slips and instructions about how to create these videos to be used during Tuesday morning announcements. We have begun using these student-created videos and they are a big hit. We wanted to share what happens when you provide support and guidance, but back away and let students own the responsibility. We are proud of our Akin Frogs for being such advocates for healthy living.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Our Healthy Zone School Team began implementing the healthy snack initiative along with our PE coach. It then sparked the idea of having healthy snack recipes shared on Tuesday morning announcements. That led to creating a 4th student-led team to film the Tasty Tuesday videos, which then led into having all students create videos that could be shared on morning announcements. These morning announcements are also shared on Facebook for our Akin families.

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

This Play has become an expected part of our morning announcements. We will keep it going through the years here at Akin.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Our students are bringing healthier food options for snacks and for lunch.
