Breakfast – Grab and Go!

Access to Healthy Foods

This year we started the breakfast cart at the beginning of the year. We set up at the front door of the school where the students enter. We serve students who arrive too late to be able to get into the regular breakfast line, which must close at the first bell. These students are usually on buses that are arriving after the bell and who would not normally be able to eat breakfast. Our trolley is set up with grab and go items such as cereal bars, muffins, cereal bowls, milk, juice, and fruit. We also have hot breakfast most days, which is great on the cold winter days we have been having. Since the beginning of the year we have steadily increased our numbers. We started at about 10 and have increased to an average of 25 students who are now receiving a healthy breakfast.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

In meeting with the principal, she agreed that the students should have the opportunity to have a healthy breakfast and allowed the students to have a table to eat at and to be a few minutes late to class.

How did you accomplish your goals?

We had agreement from the teaching staff to allow students to quickly finish their breakfast at a table near the Tefft Trolley where they would receive a late pass from a supervising teacher.
