The Denver Broncos and Beyond

Our school has expanded Fuel Up to Play 60 from an extracurricular club to class at the end of the day! We have added outdoor volleyball nets and tetherball, and our students presented their idea of adding outdoor activity stencils and repainting the outdoor basketball lines with unanimous approval.

We used our data from surveys and taste tests to implement smoothies with low-fat dairy during school lunch. To kick off this year, Katie from the Denver Broncos Cheer, Miles the Mascot, David Bruton of the Broncos (via video) and the Western Dairy Council pumped up the entire school. Our group meets every day and we are excited to create sustainable nutrition and fitness expansion.

Teamwork makes the dream work, for our principal has enjoyed the sustainable success of this program over the years. She has allowed this club to expand to a class during the school day. Students and myself (teacher-advisor) meet as a team every day.

Currently, there is SO much demand from students and parents that we are considering opening up another section. The adults empower students to investigate, analyze, problem solve, reflect, and put our non-fiction literacy learning into ACTION!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We chose to purchase rugged enduring metal for our outdoor tetherball and volleyball area; this helps sustain our ramped up recess for years to come.
