The Everything Smoothie

Gail Puzas,   Milford Middle School
Recipe Contest
We have team of different ages & learning skills who came together & voted to create the perfect smoothie. They were enthusiastic & focused, working together & having great fun. I consider myself quite blessed to watch this team evolve. Their enthusiasm is contagious & inspires me to become a better leader.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The Team included students & 2 advisors. They chose 10 fruits & veggies plus low fat yogurt & OJ. I suggested to write down the ingredients & combinations then the team took the reins. We prepped the food, they divided into teams, decided which combinations to try & taste. The team had great fun! Someone suggested “let’s put everything in” & loved it! They called it “the Everything Smoothie!”.The students also assisted cleaning the kitchen. What a great team!

How did you accomplish your goals?

We have weekly meetings & discussed & voted for the Smoothie Challenge & what ingredients to use, when & where to make the smoothies. Daily announcements of the Smoothie Challenge were made for all the students. The students were focused, organized, & so excited! They supported each other’s ideas & suggestions. It was a unanimous vote The Everything Smoothie was created. It was a team effort from start to finish.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The Fuel Up to Play 60 Team sponsored a Smoothie Taste Test at breakfast and the response was overwhelming! Daily announcements about the Smoothie Contest were made.Members of the team report they are making smoothies at home. The cafeteria has not only noticed an increase in students purchasing smoothies for breakfast and lunch but also an increase in breakfast attendance.
