The Fruit and Vegetable Challenge

Jennifer Forseth,   Centerfield Elementary School
Student Leadership

Students in Centerfield Elementary's Fuel Up to Play 60 Club came up with a challenge for their classmates: eat a fruit or vegetable for snack. Fuel Up to Play 60 students were seeing too many kids bring snacks that were unhealthy like fruit roll-ups and chips. The Fuel Up to Play 60 students represent four different fourth grade classrooms. They each introduced the fruit or vegetable snack challenge and then started tracking results with a line graph. The data shows that more students are eating fruits and vegetables for snack.

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

At first kids didn't want to trade in chips for healthy veggies, but every day it seemed like one more kid chose to bring a fruit or veggie until now 50% of students are bringing fruits and veggies.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

This was a student-led challenge. Mrs. F just typed the information into her Dashboard, but the students did all of the work!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

More kids are eating fruit and veggies.
