Following the introduction to the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program, Laura Ward utilizes International Batteries of Youth Fitness Test as part of the physical education programming. In 2017-2018, Laura Ward School applied for and received a DonersChoose grant. In STEM related units, students targeted individual student nutrition and fitness goals. The students established a 78% success rate in attaining their goals.
The noticeable change for Laura Ward students after the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program had begun was that students appeared willing to exercise with fidelity to achieve the higher scores and better times. Laura Ward students were taught that with Fuel Up to Play 60 Program, objective health and fitness may improve. Student activity participation and assessment results were based on goals specific to them.
With the FUTP 60 Program approach, students have a reference point from their prior knowledge and experience, allowing them to set a personal goal, like beating their previous aerobic cardiovascular endurance run scores The personal goals present a challenge to the students, but they are attainable. Students have learned from FUTP 60 because of the positive impact observed in students’ attitudes toward PE and fitness.
