The Whip/Nae Nae

I had a team of 5th graders team up to produce a presentation and video for all of the classrooms. The subject was a cardio version of the Whip/ Nae Nae dance. They put their own spin on the dance and demonstrated the dance for the entire school at a morning assembly. The principal distributed the video so that teachers could use it for indoor recess. The students loved it!

What challenges did you face and how did you overcome them?

The challenge was finding practice time and space. The music teacher agreed to let me use her room during lunch time and the dance team ate their lunch and then joined me for several quick practices. They also practiced during their recess, showing dedication and commitment.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

I demonstrated and taught the entire 5th grade the dance. After that, I chose a team of 18 students representing all 5th grade classes. The music teacher volunteered her room, the principal gave me time to perform and the teachers used the video in their classroom. The students sold the idea by perfecting their routine and practicing until they were happy with it!

What improvements have you seen at your school?

More activity during indoor recess.
