We started a Walking Club at Thompson Middle School. The goal for the Walking Club was to have everyone in the club walk at least 100 miles throughout the school year. Many students are well on their way and some have even passed that bench mark. The club is a student run club. Students pick up their logs at the beginning of the week, walk, log their miles, and hand them in at the end of the week. Our student leaders then log the miles into a master spreadsheet. The Walking Club has been vital to our schools health/wellness. Along with the Walking Club, our school has also began a cardio session during the school day for students to be physically active.
How did students and adults work together as a team?
The physical education and health teacher started the club. At that point, student leaders then took over and started running the club with oversight from the teachers. Students have taken the responsibility to get a log, walk, fill it out, and hand it in at the end of every week. Student leaders are always encouraging other students to walk and make sure they log their miles.
