Community involvement is important no matter how young or old an individual is, as our words or actions can speak volumes to a group of people or just one individual. I presented a lesson on the negative effects of smoking. I encouraged my students to share the information to others in the "community". A couple of months later a mother approached me to share with me how her two daughters came home and spoke to their family about what they had learned about not smoking. As it turns out, their father was a smoker and because of these two daughters, my students, sharing the information they learned in class with their family the father began the process to stop smoking. What a wonderful feeling as a teacher to know that I encouraged two elementary students to show compassion towards their father to help him stop a negative habit that will hopefully help him live a healthier lifestyle.
