Together We Can Stop Smoking

Becky Baty,   Parker El

Community involvement is important no matter how young or old an individual is,  as our words or actions can speak volumes to a group of people or just one individual. I presented a lesson on the negative effects of smoking. I encouraged my students to share the information to others in the "community". A couple of months later a mother approached me to share with me how her two daughters came home and spoke to their family about what they had learned about not smoking. As it turns out, their father was a smoker and because of these two daughters, my students, sharing the information they learned in class with their family the father began the process to stop smoking. What a wonderful feeling as a teacher to know that I encouraged two elementary students to show compassion towards their father to help him stop a negative habit that will hopefully help him live a healthier lifestyle.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Teamwork is an important part of any organization and can play a vital role in helping others.

How did you accomplish your goals?

I accomplished my goal by continuing to present the negative effects of smoking throughout different lessons and the importance of sharing this information with others in our community

What improvements have you seen at your school?

The improvement I have seen about teaching the negative effects of smoking is that more students are sharing their personal experiences of family members that smoke in class discussions.
