Trailblazing into a healthier future

Studies have shown that schools that encourage physical activity before school have better performance in the classroom. Students are more focused when they get moving in the morning. Here at DeSoto Trail we have implemented the daily Mile Club, supervised by our PE coach. To encourage ALL students to participate in the morning Mile Club, students will do a few laps around our track every morning before free play. We started with a voluntary program, then we joined the 100 Mile Club!!! We started challenges between grade levels in the morning and a "run off." The students really got into the competition and so far we have logged over 4,500 miles school-wide!!!!

How do you plan to make this Play last during the school year and beyond?

We created a wellness policy at our school and as part as our policy, now the students are required to participate in the 100 mile morning club every morning when they get to school.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Our students are more active and the obesity rates has decreased significally at our school. Students are being more active, teachers are being active with the kids, and they are eating healthier.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

Teachers and students work together by coaching each other in the physical activities and in their eating habits. Teachers have join the 100 mile club in the morning with the students!!!!
