Try It You May Like It!

The sixth grade students hosted two taste tests of healthy snacks. In October, the students encouraged the students in grades 4K-6 to try pomegranates at the Penny Carnival. In December, they provided cheese samples for students to try as they went through the lunch line. Groups of students presented and challenged the other students to stay fit, eat healthy and exercise for at least 60 minutes a day. They played a dice game with students in grades 4K-2 to get the students up and moving. In the upper grades they challenged the students to a game of Kahoot. It taught them the Fuel Up to Play 60 song and dance.

How did students and adults work together as a team?

The students planned out their activities and had to get the adults to check what they had planned and make suggestions on how to portray their message effectively. The students were very conscious about handling the food using protective gloves.

How did you accomplish your goals?

Yes, many of the students tried new snacks. The survey showed that over 80% of the student body participated in the event. While not all of the students liked the pomegranates, they were happy to try them.

What improvements have you seen at your school?

Students in 6th grade are checking labels on food and are amazed at the high content of sodium, sugar and saturated fats on some snacks that claim to be healthy.
